America's Most Dangerous Organized Crime Family ? The ...

Oct 8, 2012 by SHAUN MULLEN, TMV Columnist

There is no better example of the depths of deceitfulness to which the Republican Party has sunk than its efforts to suppress the vote by ramming through laws based on bogus claims of voter fraud that disenfranchise Democratic voters while it engages in systematic fraud itself.

This outrage was on offer in Florida, where suspicious voter registration forms were found in nine counties, including the county where those infamous hanging chads led to the U.S. Supreme Court to throw the 2000 election for George W. Bush. The forms were the work of Strategic Allied Consulting, a firm hired by the state Republican Party to sign up new voters.

Among problems with the forms were incorrect addresses, addresses that don?t exist, signatures that don?t match the names, signatures in the same handwriting, dates of births that don?t match the names, and names that match with names in death records.

Washington, D.C.-based Allied Consulting is owned by Nathan Sproul, who has been involved in GOP voter registration ?efforts? since at least 2004, an election in which there were widespread allegations of fraud involving his company that the Bush Justice Department failed to diligently pursue.

One aspect of this fraud was fiendishly clever: Sproul?s employees impersonated members of Democratic-leaning groups, registered as many Democrats as possible and then destroyed their legitimate registrations instead of turning them over to local canvassing boards.

In addition to Florida, Strategic Allied also was hired by the Republican National Committee to conduct registration drives this year in four other swing states that Mitt Romney must win if he is to oust Barack Obama.

There is no reason to believe that Strategic Allied drives outside of Florida aren?t dirty, as well, and officials in North Carolina are looking into that possibility.

Meanwhile, a videotape of an employee of the firm shows her working outside a store in Colorado Springs where she told potential voters that she wanted to register only Republicans and that she worked for the county clerk?s office. The woman was fired, while Strategic Allied itself was canned in Florida after the embarrassing revelations about its true agenda emerged.

Which begs a very big question: How many other fraudulent Republican efforts are ongoing but have not been found out?

Probably a good many, although the lid has been blown off a scheme in the Democratic stronghold of Riverside County, California to register voters as Republicans without their knowledge.

Complaints were filed by 133 residents of a Riverside County state Senate district who say they were added to GOP rolls without their knowledge, calling into question the party?s boast that Republican membership has skyrocketed 23 percent there. More than 27,700 residents of the district have become Republicans since January, according to the California secretary of state?s office, magically erasing a registration edge long held by Democrats.

* * * * *

The reason that the Republican Party is working so hard to disenfranchise blacks, Latinos, university students and low-income people who vote Democratic and will vote to re-elect Obama, is perversely simple:

Pretty much everyone save for angry white men and their compliant wives are fleeing the Republican Party in droves. The party no longer has its once considerable clout when it comes to national tickets outside of the South, where antipathy toward racial minorities and uppity women of all colors, remains strong. And as was the case in the 2008 presidential election, many of the independent women Romney needs to carry the day are repelled by the party?s efforts to deny them access to family planning and contraception, deny them abortions regardless of the circumstances, and deny them equal pay for equal work.

So what?s the GOP to do?

Rather than moderate its message, it?s trying to suppress turnout in the expectation that some Democrats may lack the photo identification cards required by voter laws not coincidentally passed in states with Republican governors and legislatures. It?s tough luck if elderly votes who no longer have photo IDs because they no longer drive, let alone elderly veterans who carry Veterans Administration cards that lack photos, are unable to vote.

Republican operatives well understand that there is very little voter fraud such as someone voting twice. Therefore, the GOP is concentrating on getting away with voter registration fraud such as registering nonexistent people to vote or signing up legitimate voters without their signatures or permission, while trying to disenfranchise Democrats.

* * * * *

As it is, efforts to put in place tough voter registration laws have largely been rebuffed by courts with the encouragement of Attorney General Eric Holder, most recently in Pennsylvania.

The Republican-dominated legislature had passed and Tom Corbett, the Republican governor, had signed an especially draconian law. It not only required photo IDs, but state-issued IDs in the case of voters who did not have drivers licenses, passports or other documents with photos. Voters who did not have certain kinds of photo IDs would be allowed to vote, but only provisionally and might be required to provide further identification after the election if their vote was to be counted.

Laws also have been set aside or held in abeyance in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin, while in Florida and Ohio, early voting and voter-registration drives have been largely restored after legal challenges.

The Pennsylvania law, which a high-ranking Republican state legislator unashamedly boasted was designed to suppress the vote in an effort to give Romney a leg up, was challenged by the ACLU after it was found that upwards of 750,000 people could be disenfranchised. Robert Simpson, a lower court judge, could have done the courageous thing by declaring that the photo ID requirement was unnecessary and unfair, but he upheld the law although the state executive tasked with enforcing it acknowledged under oath that she knew of no cases of voter fraud in the Keystone State, her department had done little to speed the photo ID authorization process, and to boot she didn?t know the specifics of the law, either.

The Democratic-dominated state Supreme Court rode the the rescue, voting 4-2 to require Simpson to show why the law would not hurt potential voters who might not be able to obtain photo ID cards in time to register to vote. Simpson ruled that the state had not done enough to ensure that potential voters had access to the documents required to get photo ID cards under the law, so he delayed full implementation of the law until after the election. He created an element of confusion, deliberately in my view, in also ruling that voters still could be asked to produce photo IDs on November 6, but if they did not have them still could vote, leaving open the possibility that less informed voters might conclude they won?t be allowed to cast ballots.

While Democrats cheered the victory, although it may be a temporary one, it drew venom from the state party?s right wing, which accused Simpson of ?judicial activism? and overstepping his authority in a ruling ?skewed in favor of the lazy,? and excoriated Corbett for the law?s failure to pass muster.

Responded Philadelphia City Commission Chairwoman Stephanie Singer: ?There?s one thing we can?t disagree on, [and] that is that no one can be disenfranchised.?

* * * * *

It is sadly unsurprising that there are no voting rights advocates anymore in a Republican Party that once proudly referred to itself as The Big Tent.

The party?s efforts to deny people the right to vote by undermining a cornerstone of our democracy are not merely criminal. They are treasonous in every sense of that weighty word and part and parcel of an ideological extremism that has manifested itself in the party?s blood lust to go to any end to deny Obama a second term.

BONUS QUESTION

This is my 10th presidential campaign and I am unable to recall anyone who is such a flagrant liar as Mitt Romney. That certainly was on offer during the first presidential debate. Which begs a question: Romney claims to be a devout Mormon, so does that mean I should assume that lying is a key tenet of the Church of Latter Day Saints?

If there are any Mormon readers out there or readers who know Mormons, please bring me up to date on whether there is some hitherto unknown aspect of the church. And if lying is not a tenet, shouldn?t Romney be punished or excommunicated or something?

EXCLUSIVE-Spain ready for bailout, Germany signals "wait"-sources

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain is ready to request a euro zone bailout for its public finances as early as next weekend but Germany has signaled that it should hold off, European officials said on Monday.

The latest twist in the euro zone's three-year-old sovereign debt crisis comes as financial markets and some other European partners are pressuring Madrid to seek a rescue program that would trigger European Central Bank buying of its bonds.

"The Spanish were a bit hesitant but now they are ready to request aid," a senior European source said. Three other senior euro zone sources confirmed the shift in the Spanish position, all speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has said Spain is taking all the right steps to overcome its fiscal problems and does not need a bailout, arguing that investors will recognize and reward Spanish reforms in due course.

Privately, several European diplomats and a senior German source said Chancellor Angela Merkel preferred to avoid putting more individual bailouts for distressed euro zone countries to her increasingly reluctant parliament.

"It doesn't make sense to send looming decisions on Greece, Cyprus and possibly also Spain to the Bundestag one by one," the senior German source said. "Bundling these together makes sense, due to the substance and also politically."

Participants said there were tense exchanges at a euro zone ministerial meeting in Cyprus in mid-September when Schaeuble told his peers Berlin could not take another bailout for Spain to parliament so soon after lawmakers approved up to 100 billion euros ($129 billion) to help Spanish banks in July.

Asked about the reports that Germany was urging Spain to wait, a German government spokesman told Reuters: "Every country decides for itself. Germany isn't pushing in one direction or the other."

A spokeswoman for Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said she was not aware of any veto from Germany for an aid request.

"What we are focused on is to get the decisions of the June summit on the banking union implemented. That would send a strong message of confidence to the markets," she said, referring to an EU decision to centralize oversight of the biggest banks to avoid a repeat of a crisis that has some of its roots in the banking system.

STALLING?

European sources said EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn was to deliver a message to Spanish leaders on Monday that Brussels wants them to apply for assistance soon and will not impose onerous conditions beyond the reforms and savings measures outlined by the Spanish government.

Brussels is keen to avoid another paroxysm of the debt crisis by getting support to Spain before it is on the brink of being forced out of the bond market, at the risk of contagion spreading to Italy and other euro zone states.

Rehn met Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Economy Minister Luis de Guindos in Madrid and said afterwards the conditions of any aid program were well known to all euro zone governments.

"Conditions would be based on country-specific recommendations that were decided for all 27 EU member states in July and there would be a clear set of policy priorities and clear timelines on the basis of these country-specific recommendations," he told a news conference.

Euro zone officials are considering a so-called Enhanced Conditions Credit Line that would keep Spain in the credit markets with support from the euro zone rescue funds in the primary bond market and from the ECB in the secondary market.

Rajoy is eager to avoid the political humiliation of conditions being imposed from outside and enforced by the "troika" of inspectors from the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and European Central Bank that has supervised programs for Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

There has been widespread speculation that Rajoy was stalling a bailout bid until after October 21 regional elections in his home state of Galicia and the Basque Country.

But diplomats said it was German discouragement, not Spanish pride, that was now holding back a request for assistance.

One senior European diplomat said the Spanish position was: "We are in favor if everyone else accepts."

Madrid did not want to risk submitting an application and having Berlin rebuff it by raising unacceptable conditions such as deep pension cuts or procedural obstacles, he said.

The senior euro zone source said Spanish leaders had understood that making a move now was the best way of avoiding losing market access and being forced into a full state bailout.

"The German U-turns have convinced the Spanish they could end up in the not too distant future in the same position as Greece, Portugal or Ireland - shut out of the markets and with a very harsh adjustment program," the source said.

The Spanish government said it would enact 43 structural reforms over the next six months and Brussels said the detailed timetable goes beyond what the Commission has asked of Spain and is an ambitious step forward.

Rehn said he was fully confident Spain would take the necessary steps to restore the economy to health and added it must continue reforming its pension system, linking retirement age to life expectancy.

Rajoy has said pensions are the last thing he would cut as he introduces sweeping savings through the social security system, though he has said he would introduce a new law on pensions before the end of the year.

Spain needs to refinance some 29 billion euros in maturing debt -- including 9 billion in short-term paper -- by the end of this month.

The senior euro zone source said that under one scenario under consideration, Spain was ready to submit the request at the weekend, with German agreement, so euro zone finance ministers could discuss it at their next regular meeting in Luxembourg next Monday.

Failing that, Madrid could make the application before an EU summit in Brussels on October 18-19, but euro zone partners such as France and Italy, which are pushing for an early decision, would not want it to drag on beyond then, the source said. ($1 = 0.7749 euros)

Video: Get bird?s eye view of the world in new documentary

>>> 7:43. you ever wonder what it would be like to fly like a bird ? a new documentary is giving viewers the chance to see the world from a bird's-eye view. john, good morning. good to see you. why birds?

>> they're the most amazing creatures. they're emotional creatures, far more intelligent than we imagine, and the most amazing thing is they are able to traverse a continent. they see the world as we would like to see it, from the air.

>> and so less exotic, less dangerous, certainly. but what an incredible view.

>> it's an incredible view. and they're obviously difficult to film so i wanted to be sure we had the technology and way of filming them that could show how amazing these creatures are.

>> let's talk about that. talk about the time and the effort and the creativity it took to capture some of these images.

>> well, we were four years making this. and all of the time, the technology was catching up with our ambition. so we have many, many ways that we tried to fly or did fly with birds. we've had birds trained to fly alongside micro leitz. that in itself takes a year to achieve to get birds used to flying alongside micro lites.

>> a micro lite being?

>> an ultra lite you call it here. it's a machine that they are imprinted on -- or imprinted on the person who flies it. they believe the person who flies it is their mother, that means they're bonded to that person and will go wherever that person goes. the micro lite goes with him. and so he can film from the air, so he can get incredible shots that you couldn't get in any other way. what it does is take you into their world. and this is what "wing planet" is all about, going into the bird's world.

>> and what do we see inside their world? one of the things you're actually able to see, and you can do this by putting a camera on the birds themselves.

>> absolutely, yeah.

>> you can see interaction with other animals, dangerous animals, you wouldn't necessarily get close to, right?

>> that's the whole point of "wing planet," the fact that these birds as they go across continents take you --

>> here is a vulture coming up on a lion going after its prey. unbelievable.

>> this is it. and what you're getting from this perspective is how the animals relate to those big creatures. because they're so clever. a vulture has to steal food from a lion, not easy. but when they do it together, they apiece the lion, and eventually he has to leave the prey behind.

>> interesting. what else is the bottom line you want people to take away from this, about how they interrelate and how they socialize?

>> well, i think what you learn as you -- you view this experience, and it really is an experience, is the whole of their world is interconnected. so you go across the continent and at times across several continents, taking on an amazing journey and shows how all of these incredible spectacles that you see are intertwined. they're all interlinked. and the birds are our guide through it.

>> this is unbelievable. the bird at the helm --

>> this is one of our favorite camera operators. a vulture. and to say they're getting high -- we take them up in a plane and he would fly and glide and give us this incredible view. a view we have never seen before across africa.

>> you've got to see it to believe it. john dowder thank you so much. "wing planet" appears on the discovery channel .

Breakthrough in understanding lung cancer vulnerabilities points the way to new targeted therapy

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? More effective treatments for one of the deadliest forms of cancer are one step closer thanks to groundbreaking research from an international collaborative study.

Scientists from the Universities of Sheffield and Cologne have identified the dependencies of multiple Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) types -- paving the way for clinical trials of new targeted treatments which could revolutionise the current approach.

Around 40,000 people are diagnosed annually with lung cancer in the UK, and SCLC accounts for nearly one in five of all these cases.

Unfortunately, the prognosis for SCLC patients is very bleak -- two thirds of people are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease when the five year survival rate with current treatments is less than five per cent.

But now researchers have discovered that survival of SCLC cells grown from human tumours relies upon a protein called Aurora kinase. This finding, published October 1, 2012) in the journal: Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), suggests that 'targeted' therapeutic strategies should focus on testing Aurora kinase inhibitors, several of which have already been developed by pharmaceutical companies.

The team also went on to show that Aurora kinase inhibitors are most effective at killing SCLC cells when the cells have high levels of the MYC cancer gene. This predicts that these drugs might be most beneficial for SCLC patients with a MYC gene amplification, which is found in up to seven per cent of people diagnosed with SCLC.

Dr Patrick Eyers, from the University of Sheffield's Institute for Cancer Studies, said: "A major goal of modern cancer research is to discover drugs that target vulnerabilities in specific cancer patient sub-populations. Current chemotherapy for SCLC kills cancerous cells and non-cancerous cells indiscriminately and results in severe side effects.

"However, revolutionary clinical trials have recently validated 'molecularly targeted' kinase inhibitors for treating cancers such as melanoma, leukemia and non-small cell lung cancer.

"We have been studying Aurora kinase inhibitors for several years, and the remarkable vulnerability of some SCLC-derived cells to such drugs can hopefully be rapidly confirmed by careful stratification of SCLC patients and their enrolment in new clinical trials."

Self-Improvement: Where To Start | Healthy Lifestyle Plus

Webmaster | October 1, 2012 (9 hours ago) | no comments

Self-Improvement: Where To StartSelf-improvement is a process, whose stimulus is usually past failure, an unwanted experience like living from one pay check to another with no extra money to spend, bad lifestyles like being overweight, lack of self-confidence or gambling, loss of a loved one, or an end to a relationship.

The result is an improvement of your life, taking control, getting your life back to normal or creating the future you want.

To put it in another way, getting the best out of yourself.

In order for someone to help themselves improve, they must first of all identify areas that need improvement in their lives, health, relationships, prosperity or whatever.

There is also need to understand who they are, their capabilities, weaknesses and uniqueness and be honest about it.

It will be useful to state these in writing and regularly refer to them so they remain focused.

Another important area to point out is for them to identify how they think they will be able to achieve their goal. So, a written action plan should then be put in place. This is achieved by self-enrichment of their mind, character and attitude. It requires effort, patience, perseverance and commitment and this change does not come easily.

Self-improvement e-books, home training programmes or life coaches are available online if one thinks they really need someone to help support them.

Self-enrichment of mind, character and attitude are done by continuously exercising your mind with positive thinking.

This is when one repeatedly tells themselves that they are just as good as anyone, can get better and can achieve anything in life. While this sounds easy, is the most difficult and yet a very important part of self-improvement. This is so because of the way we have been raised, who we are, our values and beliefs.

It is also the constant conflict with the subconscious mind that needs to be kept in check if one is going to achieve their goal of self-improvement.

Another important area is goal setting. It is necessary that you start with short term, simple, easily achievable goals, possibly in a day, before you set big goals that will take you a while to achieve. Setting huge goals that take a while to see results usually bring in procrastination. To stay motivated, it is necessary that you set simple goals first.

Setting a routine and self-discipline are the other skills required in achieving self-improvement. These can not be emphasised enough as they have a huge impact on your success. Results can only be seen when you stick to them and they help you stay motivated as well.

Identifying self-defeating behaviors like doubting your own ability to achieve, the ?I can not do this or this is for the rich? and addressing them permanently is also important. Rewarding yourself-is also important when you have achieved even the simplest of your set goals. It will help you stay motivated.

It is worth noting also that self-improvement is not an overnight thing but a process as already stated so stick with it, be faithful to yourself-and remember, it is alright to slide back a bit. As long as you realize that you are falling behind and pick yourself-up again, you will be able to achieve your goal of self-improvement.
