Exercise does a body -- and a mind -- good

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? We've heard it time and time again: exercise is good for us. And it's not just good for physical health -- research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?

A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health.

Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity -- such as social relationships and mutual support among team members -- that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.

Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.

The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.

Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.

These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors -- body image and social interaction -- may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.

"We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," says Monshouwer.

Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.

Mars rover examines rock close up

Nasa's Curiosity rover has completed its first close-contact science.

The robot pushed its arm instruments up against a pyramidal rock to assess the atomic elements that were present.

The rock - dubbed "Jake Matijevic" after a late rover engineer - was not expected to have high research value. Rather, it was regarded as an early opportunity to demonstrate the performance of the arm's "hand lens" and X-ray spectrometer.

Curiosity has now continued driving.

On Monday, it moved some 42m (138ft), the single biggest roll for the robot since landing seven weeks ago in Mars' equatorial Gale Crater.

The vehicle is endeavouring to get to location that scientists have nicknamed Glenelg, which satellite images have indicated is a junction between three types of geological terrain.

It is at Glenelg that Curiosity will likely use one of its key arm tools - its drill - for the first time.

Even before the rover gets to the junction, it will look for some suitable soil to scoop and deliver to its onboard laboratories for analysis.

Nasa's $2.6bn mission touched down on the Red Planet on 6 August (GMT).

Much of the time since then has been spent commissioning the immensely complex, six-wheeled machine and its suite of 10 instruments.

The Jake Matijevic investigation allowed the science team to use the X-ray spectrometer (APXS) and the hand lens (Mahli) in unison with the rover's infrared laser instrument (ChemCam).

The laser, which sits atop the rover's mast, also determines the chemical composition of targets, and the rock experiment meant researchers could do some cross-calibration of APXS and ChemCam.

Little information has been released by Nasa about what it saw, but then the pyramidal rock was not expected to be anything more than a standard lump of Martian basalt.

As the mission progresses, APXS and ChemCam, along with the keen eye of Mahli, will be used to survey the crater's surface for more interesting rocks. When they identify a fascinating target, it is at that point that the drill will be commanded to acquire a sample for detailed scrutiny in the onboard laboratories.

Curiosity's mission has been funded for one Martian year (two Earth years) of study. It will try to determine in that time whether past environments at Gale Crater could ever have supported microbial life.

  • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
  • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
  • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
  • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
  • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next

Letter: Driving impaired | Northwest Opinions

In response to ?Law agencies join forces to keep holiday drunk drivers off highways? (The Daily Astorian, Aug. 31): Recent studies have proved driving while talking/texting on the cellphone impairs a driver as much as, or more than alcohol.

In Oregon and Washington it is unlawful to operate a hand-held cellphone while driving. The law ?Operating a Motor Vehicle While Using a Mobile Communication Device? reads as follows:

?On Jan. 1, 2010, Oregon?s cellphone law (ORS 811.507) became effective. The law was modified effective Jan. 1, 2012, to help make our roads safer for everyone. The law is a class D traffic violation and a primary offense, meaning that a police officer may stop a driver solely for using a cellphone without using a hands-free accessory. For purposes of the law:

?Mobile communication device is defined as a text messaging device or a wireless, two-way communication device designed to receive and transmit voice or text communication.

?Hands-free accessory is defined as an attachment or built-in feature that allows the person to maintain both hands on the steering wheel.

?The new law limits the situations where drivers can use a handheld communications device for talking to two specific circumstances:

?You may use your phone without a hands-free accessory to summon medical or other emergency help if no other person in the vehicle is capable of summoning help.

?If you are operating an ambulance or emergency vehicle, roadside assistance or tow vehicle, or if you are operating a utility vehicle while servicing a utility, you may use your cellphone without a hands-free accessory.?

The minimum fine in Oregon is $110. It is no longer lawful to use a hand-held device for ?business purposes.?

Evidently, a lot of local residents have not received this update. Let?s get off the phone and stop driving impaired.

US: Ukraine fails test by jailing ex-PM

YALTA, Ukraine (AP) ? A top U.S. official said Saturday that Ukraine is failing its test on democracy in the run up to parliamentary elections, citing the jailing of ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and shrinking media freedoms.

The jailing of Tymoshenko, the country's top opposition leader and heroine of the 2004 Orange Revolution, has strained Ukraine's relations with the West, which has condemned her conviction as politically motivated. The European Union has frozen a key cooperation deal with Kiev.

Thomas Melia, the U.S. assistant deputy secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, said the Ukrainian election set for October has been compromised by the jailing of Tymoshenko and another top opposition leader. Melia said Ukraine "failed the test today."

"I think if the international community, the international observers, were to give a grade today on this election environment and whether it is going to mark a step toward Europe and the West, I think it failed that test today," Melia told an international conference in the Ukrainian Black Sea city of Yalta. "I think with the political prosecution, politically directed prosecutions, against certain opposition candidates, that has serious consequences on the quality of the election here."

The conference had been dedicated to Ukraine's integration into the EU, but many speakers used it to put the government on the defensive by criticizing its policies.

Tymoshenko was sentenced to seven years in prison last October on charges of abusing her powers while negotiating a natural gas import contract with Russia in 2009. She denies the charges, and accuses President Viktor Yanukovych, her longtime foe, of jailing her to bar her from the vote.

"The case ? from the very beginning ? was politically motivated," said Tymoshenko's top aide, Hrihoriy Nemyria, said at the conference.

Yanukovych, whose fraud-tainted victory in 2004 was annulled under the pressure of massive street protests dubbed the Orange Revolution, has resisted strong Western pressure to release her, saying he has no influence over Ukraine's courts.

Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin maintained a tough stance on the Tymoshenko case, suggesting the Ukrainian leaders will not bow to Western pressure.

"The issue of freeing Tymoshenko is exclusively in the framework of the law enforcement and judicial system of Ukraine and no statements, political declarations and blackmailing will lead to a positive decision," Kuzmin told the conference.

But Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, who was just denied permission to visit Tymoshenko in jail, suggested that keeping her behind bars will effectively prevent Ukraine from joining the Western club, which it strives to do.

"If you try to go everywhere you will likely end up nowhere," Bildt said. "You cannot pursue a policy of reforming, truly modernizing a country, without being very dedicated to a strategy and a mission."

Turtlenecks and flannel shirts make me happy after a long hot summer.? Pansies and pumpkins also!? As I begin to plan my fall gardens my thoughts turn to the inside of my new cottage.? Chesapeake's Cottage is in need of a coffee or cocktail table.? My favorite pine table is too big for my little cottage and other pieces I have are...well just not right.? One day I think round maybe an overstuffed ottoman.?? Maybe 2 small storage cubes, maybe a wicker trunk on wheels, maybe a glass top iron table.?? I keep looking around my storage room thinking surely an antique dealer would have something that would work....especially for her own house.??So as of this post....no firm decision has been made.?
